My Facebook settings

When you select account settings you will see:

Changing your name, username (if you use a nick name), email address and password are easy, ignore Linked Accounts your are interested in: Privacy and Account Security. 

I set everything to Friends only:

By clicking on View Settings a new screen appears:

 

 

You might want to change the Search for you on Facebook to Friends Only and set Send you friend requests to Friends of Friends only.  Though I haven't had any problems with the settings of Everyone as illustrated. 

 

 

 

Over time you may want to refine your settings.
